So Many Different Abilities, so little time...
I am sure you will agree being a Year 0 or Kindergarten teacher means that you have children start with such a huge, wide range of abilities. (and I know this is not just peculiar to kindergarten) Some children can count to 100 whilst others are lucky to be able to count to 10 honestly some children can't even dress themselves. I am sure you have experienced, as I have the child who really is simply and purely just not ready for school and really could have done with a few more months at pre-school. It is so hard for parents to make that decision to not send their child to school, as soon as they turn 5, as it's what we do, we start school at 5 and that is that and many parents simply do not realise their child would actually benefit more from another term or 2 at preschool. I often wish there was a starting school test to ascertain the level of readiness and then parents could be advised that maybe their child would benefit from staying a little longer at preschool. Lets face it, its not the child's fault I am sure given half the chance if someone said hey do you want to go back to preschool half of them would jump at the chance, it really must be hard to start school when really maturity wise you are just not ready. Kids all reach different milestones at different ages, I mean honestly lets just look at 14 yr olds you can have such huge spectrums of maturity and lets not even go there with the boys and girl comparison. Here children legally do not have to start school until they are 6 but this rarely is the case. They all get there eventually, I so just wish we could slow it down really whats the big hurry?
Anyway, as a teacher I often find it is hard to find simple worksheets for these children (obviously I give them plenty of opportunities in maths centres to explore math ideas and concepts through play and guided activities etc.) but sometimes I want something that they can do independently and that I can use to find out exactly what they know but also give them the opportunity to complete something to give them a sense of accomplishment, to learn how to do a worksheet and finish it and feel that yes I am a big school kid and I can do worksheets too, as I feel often for them it must be so frustrating trying to keep up.
So I have been thinking of some simple worksheets to solve this and here is my first one stay tuned for more.
