Pirate Words.
I don't know about you but I often find some of my kids were simply taking just too darn long to learn those all essential sight/high frequency words and I felt there was little follow up at home. I felt I needed something else. I really wanted them to take more responsibility and practise their words at home but it had to have a fun element, hence Pirate Words were born. In the beginning it was photocopied and cut and pasted with pirate images I could find as it was just for me there was no crime here. But I recently came across gorgeous clipart from Whimsyclips so I have had great fun updating my words and using the most cutest pirate clipart.
Its so easy its ridiculous, basically the children start with List 1. But you can start them anywhere I just find it easier to all start at the same place.
They take it home and work on it at home. I send a letter home (included) to parents to explain the programme (there is a copy using either the term sight words or high frequency words so take your pick.) I stress because this is really important and I don' want any crazy parent competition going on here, that this is not a competition this is meant to be a fun activity to help each child work at their own pace but also get them moving with both their writing and their reading. When they feel they have mastered List 1. and they really must feel extremely confident before coming to me I will test them and for this there is a checklist. I use the flashcards to test them as I like to test them out of order and not from the card. Each checklist is b/w as I find they love to colour it in.
If they know all 10 words perfectly. It is a celebration, we dance, we sing, we clap and we receive the matching certificate. Woop Woop!! There is both a girl and a boy version but they choose which ever they want.
Then it is on to List 2.
I like to test either in the morning or at the beginning of guided reading time. It is all kept in a folder so everything is quick and easy to access and honestly only takes minutes.
During guided reading time I have the individual word flash cards with me, I hold them up quickly and the chn call out the words, so not only are we quickly practising them at school but it gives me a reasonably good idea of who knows what. I tend to find that the kiddos pretty much fall into the same lists as their guided reading buddies so we only do the levels appropriate.
This set includes spellings of both mum and mom.
I have also included a blank copy of everything - lists, checklist, certificates and flashcards so you can add your own words or create your own lists.
Absolutely, everything you need to set up your binder is included. Labels, checklists, letters to parents. It is all there it couldn't be simpler.
