Every now and then during Writing or Guided Reading time I allow free choice for learning stations and as a rule it all goes quite smoothly. It truly is fascinating to watch and observe where everyone chooses to go and who with, usually I tend to find that the boys never ever choose the Writing Centre whereas the girls regularly will. I really wanted to change this, how could I fix this and make the boys really want to... like I mean actually freely choose to go to the Writing Centre. So I thought long and hard and wondered would they enjoy writing more if it was centred around more boyish kinda things, would giving them an idea of what to write about with a little sprinkle of inspiration but also something that they also may have more vocabulary in regard to more interest in and more confidence in help. I sat down and created a couple of boyish themed writing sheets just as a test run. Now I know I probably am being a little gender bias here but hey I have kids boys and girls and I have been teaching a long time now and no matter how hard we try lets face it boys and girls are mostly just plain and simple different!
Next step convincing these boys that they really do want to write. I talked about these boy theme sheets and unashamedly explained that I made these especially for the boys - it worked, they loved this special treatment, they loved that I had made them just especially for them and best of all they loved the sheets. Woop woop! I did really over the top upsell them but lets face it sometimes its just what you have to do. It kinda makes sense when I think about it, do I really want to write about something that I am just not really that interested in? If someone said to me go and write me a story about motors or engines or vacumn cleaners, I would be like umm actually no sorry I don't think so, I might just go and play with the play dough thank you very much!
I decided to make these a new addition to my Writing Centre. I introduce just 1 a week as thats enough for these boys and I have only made 25 at the moment and they often only get to the Writing Centre once a week. I redo the hard sell & the especially for the boys talk and introduce the theme and it is working.
(Don't get me wrong girls are very welcome to use them too and they regularly will.)
At the moment there are 25 different themes in this pack I hope to expand.

I personally like to use the sheet with the topic words and child self assessment, but I have made a couple of different sheets to give you more options. You could also use them as a whole class or group activity.
